Day Twenty Four

This morning, it all went wrong. Something on our Active Directory and/or home folder server broke. People could log in, but then had no work, or couldn't log in. We turned it all off, and back on again, and it worked. Hurrah.

HOWEVER. In the 20 minutes that there were issues, fixing of said issues and a test that the fixing worked, there were 4000 messages on the answer phone mostly from women, saying "I can't log in" or "I don't have Word on my desktop" and it was more or less said in a rude "you've ruined my life" tone of voice, also, as if we wouldn't have noticed because we're too busy not doing anything. If the answer phone kicks in it means we're busy, so if it kicks in when something has gone wrong, there's a 99.9% chance we're fixing it. Shockeroony.

Walked past some 6th formers who said "oh I had a free as the computers didn't work last lesson" followed by another one saying "the computers here NEVER work". How rude! I think she was referring to not being able to log on while The Big Boss was creating his huge database of fun usernames.

More random problems are happening in the new IT room. Kids click the save icon in Word, and it says it can't. If you do Save As, and save that way, it works. Considered making the machines 10.4 to see if that helps, but the iMacs are too new for 10.4 and crash out when they try to start on it.

There was lots of other random faffing today as you'd expect. Our office cooler/fridge thing came today, so we can keep BEER, I mean, milk in the office without it turning in to cheese.

The resources lady had some issues printing. It took a while to resolve as she didn't know what program she was using to print the images she wanted.

Tidied up our Citrix server deleting the old user profiles and uninstalling Photoshop Elements 2 (retro).

The new IT Assistant guy was learning Flash today as he didn't have any support to do.

Still no takers for the Technician job. Although The Big Boss says he has secured funding for an ICT Classroom Assistant. Something must have changed since last month as we weren't going to have one. They did say that the IT Assistant guy was very busy, so this new position will be a great benefit to the department. Although, with saving about £28,000 by not having yet replaced the 3 staff who left last year, maybe thats where the funding has come from.

I also found out that The Big Boss was explaining to someone from Senior Management that the reason kids can't log in from home at the moment is because setting it up is a big job and that I haven't familiarised myself with the systems yet. Maybe he has forgotten that I've worked there since 2001....and set up said systems? Who knows.

NEWS FLASH - 10.5.5 came out. Maybe that will fix the weirdness!!!11!!one!1
